HEVC to make contribution to efficiency by David Fox

Benoit Fouchard, Chief Strategy Officer, ATEME said:

“HEVC will be used first in applications where bandwidth is a problem today and the client device will easily be updated to support HEVC, either because it is a device that users replace frequently (smartphone) or because it is flexible to support HEVC as it is (PC). This means OTT delivery of live and on demand content, especially over wireless networks, is likely the first economically viable use case. Contribution applications will come later, and require more robust a complex implementations of the standard than what can be offered by compression vendors at this time.

ATEME presents HEVC codec in Brazil

Tuesday, 7th of May 2013 - Gustavo Bevilacqua Dutra, ATEME Field Application Engineer for Brazil, was invited to speak about the new 4k video compression codec - HEVC (High Efficiency Video Encoding) at a Post-NAB conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This conference, organised for the 7th time by one of the main broadcast magazine in the country - Panorama Audiovisual, was received with a great success by professionals engaged in the television production and other manufacturers interested in this subject.

The key point of the discussion was centered around the 4K and its operation on both sides: the production (capitation, workflow) and transmition.
Gustavo explained how HEVC allows broadcasters to reduce the bandwidth needed to deliver Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV – 4K). His presentation covered new functionalities of the HEVC and its high efficiency compared to H.264 for high and low bitrate.
The audience was fascinated with the video quality in 900kbps@HEVC on an iPad screen, and many relevant questions concerning this new standard were asked.

Fernando Gaio, the editorial director of Panorama Audiovisual commented,

“We are very impressed with the HEVC and the quality that it can provide to broadcaster and end-user using the current network. Gustavo also did a good association with the FoBTV (Future of Broadcast TV) and the standard that should be used in the next generations of terrestrial distribution.”

ATEME workshop in Seoul, Korea

On the 23trd and 24th of April 2013, ATEME and its Korean partner TNMTech organised an educational workshop taking place in Seoul, Korea. More than 20 different clients gathered for this event and were excited to learn the new ATEME Technology.

The workshop was split in two parts.

The first part was presented by Nicolas Moreau, ATEME Senior Product Marketing Manager, who spoke about the latest solutions for the contribution market, introducing the new Kyrion CM5000 encoder and the new Kyrion DR5000 decoder. He was very proud to announce the ATEME partnership with COWEAVER and the availability of the DS3 Interfaces in the ATEME encoders and decoders.

The second part was introduced by Jérôme VIERON, ATEME Advanced Research Manager who presented the HEVC coding and its advancement for 4KTV, by demonstrating a 4K content encoded in HEVC and shown on 4KTV.

"This workshop has been a great success”, said Eunsook WI, ATEME Regional Sales Manager for the Korean Market. “The audience left with a great idea of HEVC and 4K, satisfied with our 4KTV presentation and was very enthusiastic about the DS3 interface announcement”.

ATEME 4K encoding solution

19 April, 2013, Turkish pay-TV platform DigiTürk announced its launch of an Ultra HD (4K) demonstration channel as part of a partnership with Eutelsat Communications.

This 4K channel technology solution has been delivered to Eutelsat by ATEME.
The channel can be downlink from Eutelsat W1@ 10° east.
This is the first time 4K broadcast has been shown in Turkey with Digiturk content.

ATEME AT NAB 2013

Thank you for making the NAB 2013 so successful. It was a great pleasure receiving yet again many visitors to our stand who made our show so fantastic.

One of the highest points of interest presented at our stand was the industry's most advanced High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) codec. The HEVC codec allows broadcasters to reduce the bandwidth needed to deliver Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV).

On the contribution side, the Kyrion CM5000 modular encoder received a TV Technology Star award which recognizes and rewards the most advanced technology. The Kyrion DR5000 integrated receiver decoder was equally appreciated for its interoperability, light weight, robustness and excellent video quality.

On the multi-screen transcoding side, the widely known TITAN, a software-based high performance video transcoding solution for live and file content delivery to TVs, tablets, PCs and mobile phones caught attention of those looking for a reliable and good quality content delivery solution.

ATEME speaks on HEVC codec at MIPTV tradeshow

ATEME spoke last Wednesday at the MIPTV, a tradeshow gathering all the top players of the entire TV ecosystem, taking Place in Cannes - France, about the 4K Television's Next Revolution.

4K TELEVISION'S NEXT REVOLUTION SUPER SESSION: THE TECHNOLOGISTS – HANDS ON ADVICE FROM 4K PRACTITIONERS, 10th April 2013 from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM

Jean-Marc Thiesse, ATEME PhD Research Engineer presented together with other experts in new technologies, the near future and challenges around the 4K-UltraHD.

“Today, broadcaster can already use the H.264 video compression codec for the 4K UltraHD distribution and the satellite operator for broadcasters Eutelsat is already offering the possibility to transmit a 4K content in this way. However, 4K TVs were designed for viewers who are yearning for a pristine video quality. And broadcaster's job is to offer as much content quality as possible to them. Therefore in order to satisfy broadcasters and end users' needs which are offering –receiving excellent video quality and loads of different content - HEVC codec is the must! It saves up to 50% of the bandwidth against AVC.”

There were many questions coming from the audience asking what more is missing in order to deliver UltraHD to users' homes. Jean-Marc mentioned that one of the major challenges for the 4K-Ultra HDTV is the availability of the HDMI interface as well as support of higher frame rates by TV screens.

When the question on when the first HEVC encoder will be ready was asked,

Jean Marc concluded:
” The first ATEME HEVC encoder release is expected very soon”.

Since 2012 ATEME has been working at the HEVC codec research and is part of the 4EVER project, funded by the French government.

Eutelsat has been using the ATEME solution for the Ultra HD Video compression since January 2013.

ATEME at 2013 SVG Chairman's Forum

“People are making plans or starting to adopt MPEG-4 everywhere,” says Benoit Fouchard, chief strategy officer at ATEME, a video compression solutions provider. “Broadcasters have so much to gain from the cost of using satellites that whether they are broadcasting HD or SD, they have adopted MPEG-4.
In cable, the operators are weighed down by the number of boxes deployed that only support MPEG-2.”

ATEME Partners Technical Training, Bievres

The ATEME partners technical training was held in Bievres, the ATEME French headquarter. Seven partners from six different countries joined this two day training and gained on operational and technical skills.

Monika Ceskova-Fourneaux, in charge of the ATEME Partner programme commented, “Our technical trainings are usually divided in two sessions - Contribution and Multi screen transcoding - where our partners learn how to master the ATEME equipment. We always limit the group to eight trainees, so that we can easily manage the hands on practical sessions where everybody gets involved. Trainings are organised twice a year around March and October.”
