ATEME, a leading provider of video compression systems for the broadcast industry, announced today that its Kyrion line of MPEG-4 4:2:2 encoders and decoders was deployed broadly this month by Casablanca Online to cover the Brazilian carnival events in Salvador da Bahia and Rio de Janeiro.

The carnival coverage from the North of Brazil to Rio and Sao Paulo mobilized a fleet of more than twenty DSNG trucks, manned by more than forty operators. Over the seven day event, more than six hundred hours of live content were delivered to broadcasters such as TV Globo, SBT, TV Bandeirantes and RedeTV, as well as to web portals such as Terra and Youtube, providing live coverage of what is considered the world’s largest party. Headquartered in Sao Paulo, Casablanca Online is the leading independent integrator and operator of DSNG vehicles in Brazil, trusted by all leading broadcasters to cover headline news and events nationwide.

“Our clients love the ATEME picture quality, it preserves a high level of detail and color integrity, even on very complex crowd scenes like the carnival,” commented Alex Pimentel, Casablanca Online’s General Manager. “Another advantage of using ATEME encoders is that they are fully interoperable with all receiver brands; this is crucial for a multi-client operator like Casablanca Online,” added Pimentel.

ATEME is broadly deployed in Brazil for ISDB-T digital terrestrial television, Video on Demand and live streaming to multiple screens. Since the beginning of 2013, the company appointed a senior application engineer locally to support its integration and distribution partners in the country. Raul Rivera, ATEME’s VP of Sales for Central America and Latin America, confirms: “ Brazil is the centerpiece of our development plans in the region; throughout this year we will be increasing our investment in a support infrastructure that allows us to deliver best in class service to Brazilian clients. Winning the trust of such a prestigious client as Casablanca Online was a milestone for ATEME.”

ATEME participated at the round table of 3D & Ultra HD Group, dedicated mainly to the Ultra HD and its future development, on Thursday, the 7th of February 2013 in Paris, hosted at Eutelsat Communications and organised by Michel Chabrol. Main speakers from various companies and associations such as UER / EBU, Technicolor, Dolby, Mikros and France Télévisions presented their analysis and research on the Ultra HD requirements needed to be put in place in order to deliver the 4K to home end users. Great attention was paid to the quality of Ultra HD image its color depth and the surround sound inovation.

ATEME is currently working on the H.265/HEVC codec which was standardized by ITU late this January. By using the new H.265/HEVC the bandwidth reduction would be considerable and so broadcasters would be able to offer more content while keeping excellent video quality of image, so called “Ultra HD”.
Many questions concerning this subject were adressed to Jérome Vieron, ATEME specialist on HEVC, who pointed out the expected release of the ATEME HEVC encoder, which will be coming very soon.
