Stellite 2014 exhibit hall“Satellite” is the annual trade show for all facets of the satellite communication industry, and held each winter in Washington DC. The event brings together satellite carriers such as Intelsat, SES, Eutelsat, Telesat and others with users from every segment of the industry.

ATEME spent the show catching up with our media customers from North America as well as meeting with others that come to learn about video compression and transcoding technologies. At our demo suite adjacent to the convention center we welcomed several existing and prospective customers to show them the advances in HEVC encoding and to discuss their requirements and applications.

One of the unique aspects of the Satellite show is the myriad of user groups that attend. On the media side, news and sports contribution is heavily represented and a significant portion of the show and exhibit floor is represented by military communications and mobile satellite offerings. The traditional “telecom” markets of oil and gas and mobility are taking a much greater interest in video encoding and transcoding and convergence was in full force at Satellite 2014. For buyers of satellite equipment such as antennas, modulators, and transmission equipment this is the key show each year and was very well attended. I was impressed by the size of the exhibit hall compared to past years, indicating that companies are looking to expand their offerings and services.

  • 4K/Ultra HD was a big topic of discussion, mostly from the satellite carriers. After all, they have a lot to gain by the increased bandwidth requirements of 4K while at ATEME we’re focused on the compression efficiencies of HEVC to make 4K more cost-effective to distribute.
  • 4K/ HEVC was a topic of interest for new distribution models from theatres to cruise ships to into theatres to new OTT options.
  • Traditional media customers were looking at hybrid satellite and terrestrial models as well as how “Cloud” plays into the future.

Overall, the tenor and activity of the Show was very good!

customer workshop in Rüsselsheim, Germany

One more successful technical workshop, took place last week in Rüsselsheim, Germany, known internationally through the presence of the Opel car company and of course ATEMEs workshops organization.

Xavier Gentric, ATEME Northern Europe Sales Manager and its German partner CS Consult Service, organized a one day workshop for ATEME customers from Germany and Austria. Again with a subtle balance of academic training and ATEME vision of the market, customers were taken aboard for a new “Atemian” journey.
Quite a nice number of broadcasters, pay TV and service operators participated. “We were delighted to see their interest in our TITAN and CM5000/DR5000 line of products and also to have stimulating conversations about HEVC and 4K with them”-said Thomas Burnichon, ATEME’s File Transcoding Product Marketing Manager, who presented ATEME UHD HEVC activities and roadmap..

“The workshop was quite informative. The product and technical background information (HEVC, UHD, DVB-S2+/3) supplied during the presentations was especially valuable. It was very helpful to see what is on the market now and in the near future. Keep at it!” said Gerd Meyer, Broadcast & Production Division Engineering at CBC.

Such inputs from the field are very valuable and our answer is “Yes, we will”
We will prove it as we continue in the same vein at ANGACOM 2014.
Come along and see for yourselves.

by Gustavo Marra, Director of Applications Engineering Americas

Hello everybody!

In the last week of February we had the Vidtrans 2014, the annual conference and exhibition organized by the Video Service Forum (VSF), which ATEME is a proud member. This year event was held in Washington DC, the beautiful (and cold!) capital of the US.

Gustavo Marra speaking at VidTrans 2014Once again, we had the chance to be a speaker in the event. It was particularly exciting for me, since there was one year since the last time I presented at a VSF event. In the meantime, other Colleagues from ATEME had the chance to speak for this audience about a variety of topics.

My presentation was about an application for the SCI (Seamless Channel Insertion) tool we have available in our CM5000 contribution encoder. The goal was to share an idea on how broadcasters could save money by optimizing the use of Primary Distribution feeds. The white paper about this concept can be downloaded here

Besides the presentation, the show was also a great opportunity to catch up with friends from the industry and have some interesting conversations in between the sessions and during the lunch and get together events organized by VSF.
I hope to see everybody again in the next VSF Meeting.

Cheers,
Gustavo Marra

“smart LNB” Provides Return Path to Transform Mass-Market Direct-to-Home Satellite Services

PARIS – March 11, 2013 ATEME, a global leader in advanced video compression solutions for the broadcast industry is joining forces with satellite operator Eutelsat Communications, its innovation team and partners to demonstrate advanced video-on-demand (VOD) over satellite using Eutelsat’s “smart LNB”. This product provides a satellite return link that allows encrypted Digital Rights Management content to be offered on demand, using the same techniques as terrestrial networks.

NEWS FACTS:

Smart LNB

  • Households face a lack of Internet connectivity – Many households either do not have access to the Internet or do not have an Internet access point located near their television to access “pay-per-view” VOD.
  • Low-cost solution – The “smart LNB” is a low-cost device that bundles direct-to-home (DTH) reception of TV channels with a narrowband satellite return channel for short transmissions of IP packets.
  • Ease-of-use – For end-users, the “smart LNB” uses the coaxial cabling of existing installations to connect to the set-top-box. In the past, when a consumer wanted to purchase a VOD movie via satellite, they would need to use a secondary device – such as a mobile phone or computer – to do so. With this technology, consumers can make these purchases with a click on the remote control.
  • Extends service offerings – Opens the door for broadcasters to operate their own ecosystem of linear television and connected TV services directly by satellite.
  • IP-compatible – Compatible with legacy DVB-S2 receivers and connects TVs, tablets and other IP-compatible devices.
  • A natural match – ATEME’s TITAN transcoder line, TITAN Live and TITAN File, provides the technology to not only transcode VOD, but also streams linear channels to connected TVs, while Eutelsat’s “smartLNB” offers the return path for interactivity.

Supporting Quote:

Antonio ArcidiaconoAntonio Arcidiacono, Eutelsat’s director of innovation, said:

ATEME’s strong position in the VOD transcoding space makes them a solution of choice for leading DTH operators worldwide. The company is a natural addition to the “smartLNB” ecosystem, and we are excited to work with them and our partners as we demonstrate the future of interactive satellite broadcasting

A few words from one of the premier events for the television and radio industry in the Asia-Pacific by Femin John

Femin John presenting at ABU DBS 2014The Asia Broadcasting Union Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2014 (ABU DBS2014) was held from March 4th to 7th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Representatives from all major broadcasters in the region had gathered for the 4 days of conferences and workshops to discuss about changes in media landscape and new challenges.

This year ABU’s Digital Broadcasting Symposium addressed how broadcasters could embrace latest developments in technology and how they can leverage these developments to increase quality of experience to their customers.
Being a significant contributor to the HEVC/ H.265 standards, ATEME was invited to speak at the event on new systems and developments in compression standards.

We gave the speech at the first technical session of the event about HEVC/H.265, which was by the way the main topic of this year Symposium.
Our speech focused on the standardization process and the compression performance of HEVC/H.265 and ATEMEs role of being a major contributor in this field. More than 1,200 people visited this year’s ABU Digital and ATEME was well represented at the Symposium by the APAC team.

Impressions from APAC Kick-Off and Training in Bali by Abdul Haleem Rahiman

ATEME members and partnersIt was a great mixture of business talks, technical training, social networking and of course pleasure and fun. For almost 2.5 days Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel in the beautiful and charming island of Bali hosted ATEMEians as well as ATEME’s partners all over Asia Pacific.
For the second year in a row the APAC Kick-Off and Training session was successful. Not only did we have a higher number of partners participating in this year’s event but also we had a team of 12 ATEME employees. This number reflects the significance of ATEME’s commitment to be part of the growth of this exciting region. Our newly opened Singapore office is another major milestone.
ATEME members and partners studyingDuring these 2.5 days all the partners actively participated in all the business discussions, exchanged views, strategized leads and more importantly did a hands-on of ATEME products and solutions. ATEME also took the opportunity to reward some of their outstanding partners. A Gala Dinner on day 2 allowed both the partners and the ATEME team to mingle over a pre-dinner cocktail session and post dinner karaoke session. It’s interesting to know many of our partners and even ATEMEians have hidden talents :-). On the last day, amid the time constraint each of the partners managed to secure a slot to have a one on one session with ATEME team members.
karaoke session
We in ATEME will always be thankful to our partners in the region for all their dedication and hard work. It was a great pleasure to be in Bali and we will surely look forward to the third edition of this APAC Kick-Off and Training on another exotic island next year. Watch this space !
