a few words from APSAT 2014

APSAT logo

Thanks to our presence in the region and slowly but steadily growing business in Indonesia, ATEME is now a trusted and respected brand. We have been cordially invited and honored to take up a speaking slot as well as to be a panelist in the annual conference of theIndonesian Satellite Association, APSAT 2014 which objective is to promote the satellite industry and foster national and international collaboration. This is the 13th year in a row this conference has been held successfully and the 2014 conference focused on “The New Emerging Models in Satellite Business”.

Abdul Haleem Rahiman presentation at APSAT 2014

Abdul Haleem, our APAC Pre Sales Manager was representing ATEME in this forum and presenting a paper on HEVC. He was a speaker in session two of the conference which discussed Challenges Facing the DTH Services Market & Competitiveness Strategy of the DTH Satellite TV Industry. Abdul’s co-panelists on the same session were the top executives from Indonesian pay TV operators, satellite providers, telco operators and industry experts across the globe.

Attendees discussed the question of how platform operators and DTH providers should differentiate themselves to attract potential customers. What business model should they develop in this growing market where new players are increasingly present? They were discussing strategies that should be implemented to retain current customers and attract new ones. APSAT 2014 - attendees

Ideas were exchanged about the characteristics and specifics of the Asia-Pacific market where the sum of television owning homes and pay-television subscribers outnumbers North-Americas by five to one. Everybody agreed that the market opportunities for DTH in the region is huge, however DTH operators need to be sure to offer services to match customer needs and ensure profitability.

As the sole video subject matter expert not only in this particular session but the whole conference ATEME drew much attention to our cutting edge video technologies and our leadership in HEVC. A recent success in Roland Garros 4K transmission and EBU endorsement of our Encoding and Decoding solutions for the FIFA WORLD CUP 4K transmission was a hot topic among the delegates and participants. As for the HEVC, it is seen by the industry as the future for DTH.

News from Singapore

BroadcastAsia’s International Conference & Exhibition is undeniably Asia’s main event and a point of contact for the broadcasting and entertainment industries. The fair has been attracting visitors from all over the world for the last 19 years. This year ATEME was one of 700 exhibitors at this event which brought together 12000 participants from 90 different countries. These attendees came to learn about new developments and technology in their respective fields and to create relationships with current and future business partners.

BroadcastAsia is both a conference and an exhibition. The conference theme this year was “Discover the Right Business Model to Harness Technology and Monetize Content”. Many subjects were discussed, among them OTT, second screen, multiscreen, content distribution. Our colleague and friend, Pierre LARBIER spoke on more than one occasion during the show’s official conferences. He participated in a power panel entitled “Overcoming Challenges Faced When Converting to Digital and HD Broadcasting and Next Steps”. The conference covered transition from SD to HD and beyond. In several of Asia’s regions transmission of TV is still using analog signal. The panelists addressed the question on why and how to make digital transition in Asia.We were very proud to see Pierre speaking about HEVC and UHDTV. During the conference related to those topics, Pierre shared his knowledge about the HEVC standard for UHDTV. He presented ATEME’s newest UHDTV experimentation conducted at Rolland Garrosand talked about DVB efforts which facilitate the deployment of UHDTV. And last but not least, Pierre co-moderated “Pay TV vs SVoD between complementarity and competition” panel. The question was about the strategy the pay-tv operators should use in order to get along with new services available on the market.

Visitors at ATEME's booth

Going back to the exhibition, it has been the second time that ATEME participated at this key regional broadcasts event. The entire APAC Sales & Presales team was involved with great support from HQ. It was an excellent show for ATEME demonstrating not only our cutting edge technology but our leadership in innovation. Our EBU endorsed 4K FIFA World Cup encoder – decoder was a hot topic and attracted huge interest from the show’s attendees. Many customers and visitors stopped by to talk about our Kyron’s video Contribution solution, TITAN Live and File transcoding platforms as well. They were eager to learn more on our latest successes in 4K video contribution with FIFA WC and 4K distribution BroadcastAsia show wrapped up last Friday, and judging by several key meetings at the booth and leads collected from the show, it’s been a tremendous success for all of us at ATEME. There is no doubt, with such an event that we are reinforcing our presence in the Asia Pacific market.

TITAN Live Used to Encode and Broadcast the 2014 French Open Across Europe

Federer playing tennisPARIS – June 11, 2014 – ATEME, a global leader in advanced video compression solutions for the broadcast industry, today announced that it successfully demonstrated the power of its carrier-grade video encoding/transcoding product, TITAN Live Any-to-Any, at the 2014 French Open tennis tournament. The success of this live broadcast demonstrates yet another example of ATEME’s innovation in the compression industry, utilizing its next generation TV Head-End to deploy 4K broadcasts using the HEVC codec.

New Facts:

  • Demonstrating progressive solutions through key partnerships – ATEME partnered with France Télévisions, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) and Eutelsat and to broadcast live, via satellite, the 2014 French Open event in Ultra High Definition (3840×2160).
  • Providing the first LIVE broadcast via satellite – The 2014 challenge was to be “ON AIR” with a live UHD channel at 50 frames per second from capture to encoding and broadcast for the two weeks duration of the tournament. Using HEVC, the latest video compression standard, the demonstration solidified the Company’s ability to ensure full interoperability of UHD delivery over satellite.
  • HEVC encoding and broadcasting through TITAN Live Any-to-Any – During the event, TITAN Live received live video feed from the event’s UHD production via its 3G-SDI inputs, encoding with the HEVC codec and delivering a full single 4Kp50 stream below 30Mpbs. The feed was then uplinked on Eutelsat “EUT 5WA” satellite.
  • UHD TV sets provide 4K viewing across Europe – ATEME’s long term relationships with TV set and set top box manufacturers ensured interoperability on UHD HEVC decoders and 4K screens. Eutelsat’s unencrypted “ON AIR” satellite UHD channel was received throughout Europe by latest generation UHDTVs with DVB-S2 input. The content was also displayed onsite in the tournament’s “RG Lab” using Panasonic UHD TVs.LiveSphere™ screen dump
  • LiveSphere™ captures the event and provides content for final product testing – The event also provided ATEME with the opportunity to capture content via LiveSphere. This groundbreaking 360° video broadcast solution for live entertainment, sporting events and television shows provides an immersive experience for consumers on second screens and will be available to the industry in 2015.

People participating in a workshop in Barcelona

ATEME, its partner TmediaT and TV3 organized a workshop which was focused on the latest technologies and their respective solutions to meet our future customers needs.

The main objectives of this workshop were the introduction of our new technologies such as HEVC, OTT (Over The Top), contribution solutions and LiveSphere (a 360° view of live events). These innovations were also presented on various media (TV screen, projector & tablets).

We were very glad to see the enthusiasm of the attendees who were mainly composed of Catalan operators and broadcasters accounting for a total of 80 people.

Charlie BERCIER, Presales Manager ran through a Q&A session covering everything from theoretical video algorithms to operational implementation.

Of course, most participants at this workshop who have already had previous experience with video compression tools were looking for information about the benefits of migrating to HEVC codecs.

We would like to express our thanks to TV3 for kindly hosting us, as well as TmediaT for the efficient organization !
