Chilean Telecommunications Company to Provide New Streaming Services and Enhance Video Quality for IPTV Subscribers

Telsur EdificioPARIS – July 29, 2014 ATEME, a global leader in advanced video compression solutions for the broadcast industry, announced today that Telefonica del Sur (Telsur), the leading telecommunications company in the south of Chile, selected ATEME’s TITAN Live to increase its market share by offering a new streaming service for iOS devices and enhance video quality for its existing IPTV subscribers.

News Facts:

  • Telefonica del Sur, part of the Grupo Gtd. telecommunications group – Founded in 1893 and headquartered in Valdivia, Chile, Telsur is the fourth-largest telecommunications company in Chile and the country’s first to introduce an IPTV service in 2006. It has more than 300,000 clients and an IPTV subscriber base of 150,000 in major cities throughout southern Chile.
  • Transitioning to multi-product operator – To support its ambitious business expansion efforts, Telsur has undergone an important transition from a traditional, fixed, telephony provider to a multi-product telecommunications operator, offering wireless local telephone, Internet (ISP), IPTV and more.
  • Developing new revenue streams with industry-leading technology – TITAN Live is ATEME’s carrier-grade software processing solution for next-generation TV Head-End. It receives IP video sources coming from satellite reception and supports various encapsulation formats to enable the repurposing of content over numerous devices such as TV’s, smartphones, tablets, or Web players while maintaining pristine video quality. By deploying TITAN Live, Telsur is now able to offer a new streaming service for iOS devices such as iPhones and iPads that rely on MPEG-4 video and adaptive bitrate technology.
  • Supporting legacy equipment – Telsur’s installed base of first-generation set-top-boxes supports only MPEG-2 decoding. With TITAN Live, Telsur is able to broadcast compatible MPEG-2 video streams for its existing subscriber base, simultaneously to MPEG-4, with an enhanced picture quality compared to MPEG-2 hardware encoders previously deployed.

audio languages challenges

European Union flag

Everybody knows that twenty eight countries make up the European Union, but do they know that there are 24 official languages and that 23 of them are actively interpreted? Having some friends working for the European Union, and myself being from a new European member country, I had some vague idea of translation needs and the huge amount of work to do in this field. But I did not realize that simultaneous translation of 23 languages incredibly required more than 500 translators!

One of the great demonstrations was carrying out live streaming on TV, internetand radio during the presidential debate broadcast in twenty three languages in May 2014.

People across the 30 countries were able to watch the debate in their own language. The translation was done instantly with no resulting delay in the video transmission. This technological demonstration was made possible by a mix of different technologies including the Televic TCS5500 digital conference system used for the instant translation into the official languages and Ateme Kyrion CM5000 MPEG contribution encoders. The standard version of Kyrion used has the capability to encode one video and up to thirty-two separate digital mono audios. The video can be encoded in MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, the audios in MPEG-1 Layer 2. This technology is also used on a day-to-day basis by the audiovisual service of the European Parliament.

To experience incredible streaming in all languages and to learn more about the debate and technology used, please follow the link here

Application engineering training in Bièvres.

People talking

It’s a famous saying. When you stop learning you stop growing.

Just at the time the company is gearing up for a historic moment to be public listed in EuroNext, the Application Engineering team regrouped in HQ for extensive technical training sessions. The whole of APAC and AMERICAS Pre Sales resources gathered and were involved in 4.5 day long multi subject training sessions. This was the second time this year such training sessions have been conducted for core engineering teams who face the customer at a very early stage of a business deals. The continuous learning process is not only product or solutions focused.

Such sessions give the team the opportunity to mingle and present themselves to the team in HQ. This gives participants the chance to know-who and when they need to reach out to the subject matter experts. Bridging the gap between continents and HQ, putting a face to an email ID and most importantly understanding our core technology and solutions. It does help in preparing the future and makes teams ready for all the specific challenges in their respective regions.

To make this session even more successful, the folks in HQ also organized a BBQ session after work at the compound of the office. It was lively, fun and the spread of foods and drinks was amazing. The top management who joined the BBQ gives a warm welcome to the newly joined Pre Sales folks from AMERICAS. I am sure this session here in HQ gave them a pleasant first week in the company and provided a huge morale boost for their career adventure with ATEME. We owe it the great guys in HQ for such a great week. Thank you.
