Every World Cup tests the media industry in ways no laboratory or benchmark ever can. For a few weeks, infrastructure designed months in advance operates at extraordinary scale, exposing both the strengths and weaknesses of modern media workflows. Every decision, from contribution and signal acquisition to content delivery, is tested under real-world conditions.

The world cup revealed something different. Live media is no longer defined by the hardware it runs on, but by the freedom to run workflows wherever they create the most value. The codecs, protocols, and picture quality behind it were all familiar.

Across contribution, processing, and delivery, operators now have the flexibility to deploy infrastructure where it makes the most sense, scale it when demand requires it, and adapt it as operational priorities evolve.

Observation 1: Software has become the operating model

For years, software was discussed as an alternative to dedicated hardware. Today, that conversation feels outdated. The real value of software is not where it runs, but what it enables.

Operators can now deploy the same workflow on dedicated appliances, commercial off-the-shelf servers, virtual machines, or public cloud infrastructure, depending on operational, commercial, or regulatory requirements. Operators are no longer designing infrastructure around fixed platforms. They are designing it around flexibility.

The transition to software decouples capability from infrastructure. That lets the same media workflows move wherever they create the greatest operational value. Replacing hardware was always a side effect.

Observation 2: Flexibility is becoming more valuable than capacity

Historically, operators built infrastructures capable of supporting their biggest event, even if much of that capacity remained underutilized for the rest of the year.

Software is changing that equation.

Operators can now expand processing resources for the duration of a tournament and release them afterward. Specialist workflows can run temporarily. Capacity moves to where it is needed without changing operational processes.

This evolution is also changing commercial models.

Permanent infrastructure sized for a four-yearly tournament sits idle most of the time. Operators now consume additional software capacity only for the duration of the event. Deploying specialist processing where it is needed, then releasing it when demand subsides, defines modern live media operations. The industry is gradually moving away from owning peak capacity toward consuming operational flexibility. For major live events, adapting quickly is worth more than provisioning permanently.

Observation 3: OTT has become the design center

The growth of streaming is no longer the story. That story has already been written. The more interesting shift is that OTT has become the primary destination for live audiences, and that changes how the entire media workflow is designed.

Operators increasingly optimize contribution networks, processing, encoding, packaging, origin infrastructure, and delivery for IP streaming, while still supporting terrestrial broadcast, satellite, cable, and IPTV. Broadcast is still here. The center of gravity has shifted. The viewer increasingly expects a streaming experience. Everything upstream is evolving to deliver that experience.

Observation 4: Global events still demand local formatting.

Some of the most important technologies in live media remain almost invisible. Frame rate conversion is one of them. Despite increasingly global production workflows, television standards remain regional. Different frame rates continue to coexist around the world, making high-quality frame rate conversion an essential part of international sports distribution.

Across multiple broadcasters and media service providers, motion-compensated frame rate conversion capacity was temporarily expanded to support international distribution. Additional processing was enabled only for the duration of the tournament through software licensing, then released once the event concluded.

It is a reminder that some of the most important innovations in live media are the ones viewers never notice. More importantly, it illustrates how software is changing operations rather than simply changing deployment models.

Observation 5: Understanding audiences is becoming as important as understanding networks

One of the most interesting observations from the tournament came not from the network itself, but from the people using it. Audience behavior evolved throughout the competition.

During the group stages, many matches were consumed individually on mobile devices as viewers watched from work, while travelling or between other commitments. As the tournament progressed into the knockout rounds, viewing became increasingly communal. Families gathered around televisions, friends met in bars and restaurants, and more people shared fewer, larger screens.

This shift in viewing behaviour changed the profile of network traffic throughout the tournament. While overall audiences remained exceptionally high, the mix of devices, viewing sessions and traffic patterns evolved as the competition progressed. For CDN operators, understanding those behavioral changes now matters as much as understanding the network. Audience behavior will shape the future of live streaming as much as infrastructure does.

Observation 6: Efficiency is still winning

One surprise: the industry’s focus stayed on the best viewing experience rather than the highest resolution. Despite continued investment in UHD workflows, 1080p remained the dominant operational format for premium live sports. Most international contribution, regional distribution, frame rate conversion, HDR processing, and affiliate delivery continued to be based on 1080p, with UHD reserved for selected production and distribution paths.

That reflects the realities of large-scale distribution.

For many operators, delivering exceptional quality to the largest possible audience remains a higher priority than maximizing pixel count. Advances in video compression, particularly HEVC and AV1, continue to improve picture quality while keeping bandwidth under control across OTT, IPTV, and broadcast services.

Quality of Experience (QoE) has become a broader measure than resolution alone. Reliability, startup time, latency, consistency, and efficiency increasingly define how audiences judge a live service. In live sports, the best experience often matters more than the biggest number.

Conclusion: The workflow has become the platform

Every World Cup provides a glimpse of where the media industry is heading. The event showed an industry that has largely moved beyond debating whether streaming works or whether software belongs in live production.

The next challenge is operational.

  • How do we build workflows that can adapt continuously to changing audiences, changing business models, and changing infrastructure?
  • How do we scale globally without permanently provisioning for rare peaks?
