In today’s fast-evolving streaming landscape, content providers are in a constant race to deliver flawless viewing experiences across devices, platforms, and network conditions. At the heart of this effort lies a critical but often overlooked component— the OTT packaging. As the global leader in video delivery solutions, Ateme offers an innovative suite of packaging solutions under its NEA product line. These solutions form the backbone of modern OTT workflows, addressing everything from live streaming and time-shifted viewing to personalized playback and monetization strategies.
Viewers expect seamless playback, crystal-clear quality, and instant access to content. Ateme’s OTT packaging solutions deliver just that, by optimizing content delivery for a wide variety of playback environments across the breath of user cases including linear, startover, catchup, nPVR, and VoD.
Ateme’s focus is to address four (4) key value propositions for our media and entertainment customers:
- Optimizing Quality of User Experience
- Driving Cost Efficiency and Sustainability
- Enabling Monetization at Scale
- Flexible, Future-Proof Architecture
Let’s dive into these key value propositions that set Ateme’s OTT packaging offerings apart—and how they empower streaming services to scale, differentiate, and thrive.
Optimizing Quality of Experience (QoE)
The playlist generated by the packager defines the end user video viewing experience by informing the video player about the content available for a specific user session as well as by defining which features are available during video play. With the power of Ateme packaging, OTT services can enhance the experience of their subscribers in the following ways.
- Optimize for Different Subscriber and Devices – With Ateme’s Stream Adaptions and Manifest Filtering functionality, OTT providers can define the audio / video profiles available for video streaming based on their device, geo location, whether they are on or off the broadband provider network, or other service-specific criteria.
- Broaden Content Reach to Multi-Language Subscribers – By supporting multi-language audio and rich subtitle functionality, including image to text conversion, OTT services can maximize the audience capable of enjoying the content and protect the subscription recurring revenue streams.
- Provide broadcast level latency for sports – With support of DASH and HLS Low Latency approaches (including Playlist Delta updates, partial segments, byte-range requests), OTT users on a variety of devices can enjoy the same level of latency currently provided by legacy STBs.
- Efficiently navigate with visual trickplay – With support of iframe and thumbnails in OTT players, users can use visual cues to fast forward and rewind to the specific content of interest.
- Optimize visual experiences – With support for signaling of HDR and DolbyVision in the HLS and DASH playlists, compatible video players can leverage the additional metadata to deliver seamless playback and optimal quality.
- Continual innovation via future-proof solution – With Ateme’s strategic in-house packaging technology, Ateme provide a future-proof solution for quickly integrating new features and technologies based on customer requirements and technology innovations.
Driving Cost Efficiency and Sustainability
In the face of rising content acquisition and distribution costs, Ateme’s solutions help providers streamline operations and reduce overhead.
- Reduce infrastructure with sustainable, high-density processing – Ateme’s packaging engine supports large-scale deployments on fewer servers, leading to lower power consumption and reduced hardware footprint.
- Reduce costs for creating of VoD assets from linear channels & broaden content library– With the ability to seamlessly generate VoD assets by leveraging the splice management functions of the NEA packager, Ateme can automate the creation of VoD assets from linear recordings – reducing operational costs while enabling a broader content library for subscribers.
- Reduce origin processing, network throughput and cache storage – Reduce packaging, core to edge bandwidth, and cache storage using CMAF, Common Encryption and IMSC subtitles for HLS and DASH devices.
- Reduce operation costs with robust GUI, logs and metrics – While Ateme provides a variety of support and professional services options, our goal is to enable OTT providers to self-manage the deployed solutions by providing rich management GUIs and robust logging for troubleshooting.
Enabling Monetization Via Secure Delivery and Personalization
Ateme understands that high-quality content delivery must also drive revenue. Its packaging solutions support monetization strategies aligned with today’s streaming economy and are critical in an era where subscriber growth is plateauing and content costs are rising.
- Enable personalization based on users or devices: Through manifest manipulation and stream adaptation, providers can deliver tailored experiences—unlocking premium services and reducing churn.
- Enable Dynamic Ad Insertion and alternate content with flexible splice management – Ateme’s flexible splice management support enables the packager to signal these splice points via customer definable templates for integration with manifest manipulators, including Ateme NEA Composer.
- Protect content from hackers and pirates – Leverage rich DRM (including key per track and key rotation per period or event) and watermarking functionality to protect your content and associated revenues from unauthorized usage.
- Ensure compliance with content licensing –Content licensing agreements typically include a variety of limitation including what can be viewed based on device type, in or out of home viewing, and screen mirroring. These limitations can be enforced via Ateme Stream Adaptions that limits profiles available based on device or location and supports for HCP signaling for limiting screen mirroring.
Flexible and Open Future-Proof Architecture
Another key advantage of the Ateme packaging solutions is its open, modular approach. All of the Ateme NEA packaging products are built on the same -in-house developed packaging engine—ensuring consistent functionality and performance across deployments, whether on-prem, in private data centers, or in the cloud. The microservice-based solution reflects Ateme’s commitment to future-readiness. This architecture delivers:
- Deploy in YOUR target environment based on YOUR strategy – Each OTT provider has different technical and business strategies, and Ateme can deploy OTT packaging solutions in the infrastructure that best meets YOUR business & technology strategy, whether on-prem, cloud, or hybrid approach.
- Ease of integration with open and robust APIs: The packager is an integral part of any OTT service and requires interaction with other components to deliver the OTT service. With a broad set of APIs and pre-integration with various CMS platforms and DRM vendors, OTT services can be assured of timely and seamless integration via the standards-based APIs.
- Support multiple linear ingest options – With the ability to support MBTS via unicast and multicast as well as unicast CMAF, linear content can be ingested on prem or in the cloud.
- Single Pane of Glass for E2E Management with Pilot – With an Ateme end-to-end video processing, packaging, and delivery solution that are managed via PILOT Manager, Ateme reduces the complexity of deploying and managing an end-to-end OTT workflow.
Conclusion: The Strategic Role of OTT Packaging
Packaging is no longer a back-end utility—it’s a strategic differentiator. From playback quality and user experience to monetization and platform agility, Ateme’s OTT packaging solutions play a foundational role in helping providers win in a hyper-competitive market.
As streaming evolves toward a multi-device, ad-supported, and cloud-native future, Ateme stands out by combining technical excellence with practical flexibility. Its core packaging engine is built to power the future of streaming—reliably, efficiently, and at scale.
