High fidelity video compression for broadcast
and broadband.

ATEME has been chosen by CBC, Germany’s leading tv-production and broadcast enterprise (a company of the Media Group RTL Germany) to supply encoding and decoding equipment for relaying live HD coverage of sports events such as car racing back to its playout centre in Cologne. The ATEME codecs will be deployed on location for backhauling the dedicated feed over terrestrial IP fiber links at full HD quality.

This is a major win for ATEME, involving migration to MPEG-4 HD backhaul for one of the world’s highest profile sporting events, where the quality of the video is especially important for the audience. The Kyrion encoders will deliver top quality HD pictures with the additional challenge of a relatively low bit rate of 15 Mbps. Being able to demonstrate high quality at that bit rate was critical, and meant that ATEME was chosen in place and addition of CBC’s other codec suppliers.

The high level of support provided by ATEME’s German partner Global Media Distribution Services (GMDS) also played a big part in winning the CBC business.

Aldea Solutions, the global provider of high quality real-time video transmission services for sports, news, and entertainment, has confirmed its choice of ATEME as its supplier of encoders and decoders for video contribution using state of the art H.264 encoding for the Pan American Games in Guadalajara.

ATEME contribution equipment was chosen for its combination of quality, flexibility, support, and value, and was deployed in time for the Pan American Games in October 2011, when it demonstrated its ability to cope with high levels of throughput allowing no margin for error. The Pan American Games was the world’s largest multi-sports event of 2011, involving 6000 athletes from 42 nations within which it attracted high viewing figures.

“Some of our customers had used the ATEME products and recommended them,” said Karen McCone, Aldea Solutions’ VP for Marketing and Technology. “After extensive testing, we took the opportunity to actually deploy the encoders in Guadalajara for the games. The experience with the ATEME encoders and decoders during that hectic time went well ” Now that the Pan American Games are over, McCone confirmed that Aldea made the right choice with ATEME.

Based near Paris in France, ATEME supplies both video contribution and distribution equipment, and has been making strong inroads against larger and older competitors over the last two years, with a string of successes. The company is now one of the major players in encoding, and increasingly often wins significant contracts, as at Aldea Solutions.
