High fidelity video compression for broadcast
and broadband.

By Gustavo Dutra, Field Applications Engineer – Brazil

Last week, my colleagues Gustavo Marra, Raul Rivera, Paul Kosac and I attended the most important trade show of Latin America. The SET BROADCAST & CABLE SHOW in Sao Paulo, Brazil took place on August 19 through the 22nd.

What we had with us during the show in Brazil was contribution equipment which included the CM5000 with L-band ENCODER and the DR5000 IRD. We also were proud to present our best seller in the Brazilian market; the AM2102 ISDBT- T ENCODER. The biggest highlight of the event however, was our HEVC (H.265) demo with low compression rates (1,5Mbps and 900Kbps) using TITAN platform.

Another highlight that took place was the speaking panels. Gustavo Marra, our Director of Applications Engineering, Americas’, presented ATEME’s Live and File distribution HEVC case (French Tennis Open 2013) and I presented along with other competitors and R&D entities HEVC standard and status.

Our booth was very busy though out the show so my team and I had to be on our toes at all time. This show was very beneficial for our business in Brazil and all of LATAM. Now we must roll up our sleeves and get to
work. And to all participants we say THANK YOU and see you next year / Muito obrigado e nos vemos no próximo ano!

by Radiene Watson, Vice President, Service Provider Market

ATEME recently exhibited with our US rep firm, ComTech-Sales at the North Central Texas Society of Cable & Telecommunications Engineers Vendor day in Fort Worth, TX. Decision makers from several Service Providers such as Charter, New Wave, Suddenlink and Time Warner attend and visit the vendor display tables. We were showing some Roland-Garros 2013 HEVC feeds running on an iPad.

Mike LaJoie, Time Warner Cable CTO and current SCTE Chairman was the keynote speaker. He talked about how important it is to stay involved with the SCTE. SCTE Cable-Tec Expo — the cable telecommunications engineering show of the year—hosts 10,000 attendees annually and provides the opportunity to discover and learn first-hand about the latest in cable telecommunications technology, products and services in one cost-effective setting. For 30 years the industry has relied on Cable-Tec Expo to provide the most energizing, technical knowledge exchange of the year.

At the 2013 SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, (in Atlanta this October) Anais Painchault will speak on our advanced MPEG2 compression. Her paper was chosen out of several hundred submitted in this category. Since the US Cableco’s still have millions of MPEG2 STBs in their field, further improvements in MPEG2 compression is extremely important. Improving the MPEG2 codec facilitates further compressing MPEG2 signals so they each need less bandwidth. Smaller MPEG2 streams means more streams can be sent in each 38.8 MHz QAM channel, thereby allowing the Cableco’s to advance the number of services in their channel line-up. Competition between Cable, Telco and Satellite providers is fierce in most areas of the US. The company offering the best service usually wins the subscriber! Having the most subscribers, in a dense area, gives the Service Providers a better position in negotiating Programming Rates, which is one of their largest expenses. Mantra of US Service Providers … Content is King!

Rede Record Goes Digital In Several Important Cities Using Kyrion Encoders

São Paulo – August 20, 2013ATEME, a global leader in advanced video compression solutions for the broadcast industry, today announced that Brazilian broadcaster, Rede Record, has used its encoders to expand the commercial deployment of digital television in multiple regions across Brazil, including Bauru and São José do Rio Preto in the state of São Paulo, João Pessoa in the state of Paraiba and Uberlândia in the state of Minas Gerais.

Key Facts:
Digital TV expansion: Rede Records selected the Kyrion AM2102 encoders to expand its free to air digital TV coverage across multiple regions.
Kyrion meets the Brazilian standard: Since 2009, Rede Records has been utilizing ATEME’s Kyrion encoders across Brazil to deploy digital terrestrial television in accordance with ISDB-T, the technical standard for digital television broadcast used in Brazil, across South America and in other parts of the world.
Simplifying the head-end: Rede Record chose the Kyrion AM2102 for its versatility and simplicity. The equipment is capable of simultaneous high definition and standard definition transmission (one-seg for mobile reception) within the same chassis, by encoding from either the same or different video inputs.
Industry First: The partnership between ATEME and Rede Record has resulted in significant workflow optimizations, such as the conversion of EIA708 closed caption subtitles to the ISDB-T standard within the Kyrion encoder, an industry first to simplify broadcast operations.
Future-proof technology: ATEME’s ongoing development of system codecs, and its ability to install updates remotely, ensures that its customers are investing in the next generation of encoder, without additional capital expense.

Marcio Pena, engineering manager, Rede Record said:

“A determining factor in choosing ATEME’s Kyrion AM2102 as our compression platform was based on the equipment’s capability to encode 16 audio channels in both high-efficiency and low-complexity AAC while meeting ISDB-T standards. More importantly, ATEME builds future-proof equipment by providing ongoing updates, providing us with measurable ROI and lower capital expenses.”

Great news! Kyrion CM5000 is shortlisted to win the “Best satellite contribution/distribution/transmission solution” CSI award 2013. As this product really helps operational people on the field to quickly set up their transmission thanks to the built-in modulator, it makes perfect sense to have it nominated in this competition. I am very proud it can compete with other disruptive products like the latest satellite modulator from Newtec! The Kyrion CM5000 has already been awarded during last NAB and I believe it does have a chance to be awarded again at the next IBC show in Amsterdam.

Check out the solution and product short list in other categories as well, it showcases industry’s best gears.

an exclusive interview with Rémi BEAUDOUIN, ATEME Director of Product Marketing:

Remi Beaudouin, ATEME Marketing DirectorMonika Ceskova Fourneaux: IBC is right around the corner (IBC 2013, 13-17 September). Will you be presenting something original in video compression this year?

Rémi Beaudouin: Yes we will! Our research and development team has been very busy over the past months with the continuous advancement of the HEVC codec. At IBC 2013, we will present our latest video quality/bandwidth efficiency results not only for 4K Ultra HD television, but also for OTT profiles.
In addition, IBC 2013 will represent a major milestone as we will demonstrate the 1st productization stages of HEVC: HEVC encoding will be embedded in TITAN Live/TITAN File, our carrier-grade software video transcoding solution dedicated to multi-screen delivery and Kyrion DR8400, our versatile and universal Integrated Received Decoder.

MCF: Does it mean that you are launching new hardware to run HEVC codec?

RB: No. No new hardware is needed. The beauty here is that HEVC capability is a software upgrade on the existing platforms, including of course the ones deployed on the field. Both TITAN and DR8400 platforms have been launched more than 4 years ago. We are leveraging the future-proof aspect of these designs and so we are able to propose field upgrade to our partners. By the way, let me emphasize that DR8400 is a word’s first: there is no other professional IRD on the market that can decode HEVC.

MCF: Many of your competitors will equally present the HEVC codec applied to their solutions. What differentiates ATEME from the others?

RB: We deliver what we say and do not make any haste announcements promising something which will be ready in two years’ time. ATEME is also a key contributor of the HEVC standard. Our R&D team is constantly in touch with worldwide experts to submit ideas and get the best of the Industry community. Finally we are involved in the 4EVER project, sponsored by the French government and therefore each development is scrutinised and watched very closely. For all this reasons, our clients trust us and consider us as their expert partner delivering cutting-edge solutions, rather than just providers.

MCF: In addition to HEVC, are there any others product announcements?

RB: Yes. We are cooking a lot of solutions and product innovations for the show. These will be real game changers… Keep patience, you will hear about them soon.
